Design Concept

The project involves an addition to an existing three-story building constructed in the International Style of the White City. Although the building is not designated for preservation, it possesses unique architectural values that were deemed important to maintain and renew.
The addition comprises two full floors directly atop the existing structure, and a partial floor on the roof, with careful attention to the repetition of window and balcony openings in the new floors to match those of the existing ones.
The ribbon window in the stairwell, including the stepped design of the surrounding walls, has been raised and preserved.
All the building’s walls are reinforced with 25 cm-thick concrete to provide seismic resistance.
On the ground floor, the commercial façade facing King George Street was originally elevated above street level. We lowered the commercial floor to street level, which is currently being renovated and upgraded by widening the existing sidewalk over a decommissioned traffic lane. This creates a harmonious integration between the public space design and the commercial frontage along the street.
Ultimately, the project results in a renewed building that preserves the original architectural style dating back to 1933.
